If You Spent a Day with Thoreau at Walden Pond

If You Spent a Day with Thoreau at Walden Pond, written by Robert Burleigh and illustrated by Wendell Minor, was a nominee for the 2014-15 South Carolina Picture Book Award.

If You Spent a Day with Thoreau at Walden Pond introduces young readers to a figure they’ve likely never heard of before, Henry David Thoreau. In this easy-to-read picture book, we see what a day with Thoreau may have been like. It would involve observing nature and enjoying the simple things in life, things we could all stand to do a bit more of.

While this book provides a glimpse into Thoreau’s world, it does little to tell about the man himself. Yes, the book includes a very short biography at the end, but very few young readers will give that the attention it deserves.

If I were to use this book in my school library, I would have to do a short mini-lesson on Thoreau before diving in. As mentioned previously, most children have no idea who Thoreau is, so this book may not mean much to them without a little background information.
