The Granddaughter Necklace

The Granddaughter Necklace, written by Sharon Dennis Wyeth and illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline, was a nominee for the 14-15 South Carolina Picture Book Award.

The Granddaughter Necklace is a moving story that highlights the importance of honoring one’s history and lineage. The necklace that moves this story along was passed down from generation to generation, from mother to daughter. Readers see its journey and learn a little about the women who wore it.

The author’s note at the end of the book gives readers a look at the author’s family that inspired this book.

As readers discover the history of this one family, they may reflect on their own family traditions, and many may examine items that are passed from one generation to the next. This book could even lead some young readers to conversations about family history.

I’ll admit that this book made me tear up a little, simply because it caused me to reflect on my own relationships with the women in my family. I come from a long line of strong (and sometimes ornery) women, and, while we don’t have a necklace or anything like that to pass along, we do have stories and love for each other.

Even though this is a picture book targeted to children, I would say that adults may get more out of it. I think this would be an excellent gift for Mothers’ Day, and it could be something that ends up being passed on for generations to come.
