Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave

Dave the Potter, a Caldecott Honor Book, Coretta Scott King Award winner, and nominee for the 2012-13 South Carolina Picture Book Award, is truly an astounding read. It tells the story of Dave, a slave in South Carolina, who made wonderful works of art and inscribed his beautiful pots with verses that told quite a bit about his life.

This book shows readers, both young and old, the power of art. Couple that with a few simple but evocative words, and readers are left with a story that will move and inspire them.

This book is perfect for art teachers and those learning about slavery in America. It is a quick, engaging read-aloud that will make even the youngest readers think about how they can express themselves–and maybe even make a difference–through art.

Dave the Potter:  Artist, Poet, Slave is written by Laban Carrick Hill and illustrated by Bryan Collier.
